Breaking Down The Ringer’s 2026 NFL First-Round Mock Draft: Picks & Analysis

32. Seattle Seahawks
Chris Johnson (CB, San Diego State)

"With just four picks in this year’s draft, Seattle will very likely trade out of this pick and collect more draft capital. But Johnson is the kind of player the Seahawks could be looking to snag with their first selection."

Seattle trading down does make plenty of sense, although Johnson fits the type of long, competitive corner the Seahawks have historically valued.

We are just one day away from the start of the 2026 NFL Draft. Recently, The Ringer's Danny Heifetz unveiled his first-round mock for all 32 selections.

Here's a pick-by-pick breakdown, along with my own rapid-fire analysis.
1. Las Vegas Raiders
Fernando Mendoza (QB, Indiana)

"Nothing to discuss here. Vegas can spend the rest of its draft making Mendoza's life easier."

This is the kind of pick the Raiders have to make if they believe Mendoza is the guy. The bigger question is whether Las Vegas can build a stable enough offense around him instead of dropping another quarterback into chaos.
2. New York Jets
Arvell Reese (LB, Ohio State)

"Texas Tech's David Bailey and even Miami's Rueben Bain Jr. are more traditional pass rushers who would make more immediate sense in defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn's scheme... But it is not clear that Glenn would have enough juice to convince the front office to take either of those players over the consensus pick in Reese."

I like the swing on talent, even if the positional fit is not perfectly clean. Reese gives the Jets a defensive weapon, but this pick only works if the staff has a real plan for how to use him.
3. Arizona Cardinals
David Bailey (DE, Texas Tech)

"The Cardinals are widely expected to take a right tackle here. But Bailey is considered a better player than any of the tackles in this draft, and Arizona could use a pass rusher."

This is a strong value pick, but it comes with some pressure because Arizona also badly needs offensive line help. Taking Bailey says the Cardinals trust the gap between him and the tackle class is too big to ignore.
4. Tennessee Titans
Sonny Styles (LB, Ohio State)

"Head coach Robert Saleh probably wants a pass rusher here. But Bailey’s gone, and Rueben Bain Jr.’s T. rex arms are more of a problem for Saleh than for other coaches, so the Titans go for Styles as their potential Fred Warner."

I don't mind the player, but I would question passing on a more direct pass-rush answer this high. Styles can become a defensive centerpiece, but Tennessee still has to find someone who consistently affects the quarterback.
5. New York Giants
Jeremiyah Love (RB, Notre Dame)

"I know, I know. The Giants took Saquon Barkley with the no. 2 pick in 2018, and then they were basically the worst team in football for his entire tenure. But if Love is still on the board at no. 5, the Giants seem likely to take him."

This would be controversial, and understandably so, but Love is not just a “running back pick.” He is an offensive identity pick, and the Giants need someone who can immediately make life easier for QB Jaxson Dart.
6. Cleveland Browns
Francis Mauigoa (OT, Miami)

"Cleveland runs so fast to take an offensive lineman that it can barely pretend to take trade-related phone calls for the entire eight minutes before its pick."

This is probably the cleanest team-needs pick on the board. Cleveland cannot fix everything at once, but starting with a high-end tackle is the right way to rebuild an offense that has too many weak spots.
7. Washington Commanders
Rueben Bain Jr. (DE, Miami)

"As a player, Bain would be a good fit for Washington here, as the Commanders still need front-seven pass rush help even after free agency."

This feels like good value and good roster building. Washington has enough offensive pieces to justify using this pick on a pass rusher who can give the defense more bite up front.
8. New Orleans Saints
Caleb Downs (S, Ohio State)

"The Saints have poured resources around QB Tyler Shough, and now they could be in position to win the NFC South. Downs is a perfect safety-nickel hybrid cornerback for the Saints defense."

I love this fit because Downs is more than a traditional safety. For a Saints team trying to stay competitive, adding a movable defensive back who can cover, tackle, and disguise looks makes a ton of sense.
9. Kansas City Chiefs
Spencer Fano (OT, Utah)

"With [Patrick] Mahomes coming off a torn ACL, the Chiefs have cut right tackle Jawaan Taylor and are pretending that they are OK with Jaylon Moore at that spot. I’ll believe it when I see it."

The Chiefs should not overthink this. Fano isn't the flashiest prospect, but he is a day-one starter who brings immediate technical refinement to a glaring blindspot.
10. Cincinnati Bengals
Mansoor Delane (DB, LSU)

"The Bengals defense has been a sieve for years. They are simply not in position to pass on the best cornerback in the draft."

This is the kind of practical defensive pick Cincinnati has needed for years. The Bengals have spent too much time relying on their offense to cover up defensive problems, and Delane gives them a real starting-caliber piece.
11. Miami Dolphins
Carnell Tate (WR, Ohio State)

"The Dolphins sprint to take Carnell Tate and add some actual professional ability to their receiver room, whose current no. 1 is … Jalen Tolbert? Tutu Atwell? Malik Washington?"

A complete overhaul of Miami's depleted receiving corps had to start somewhere, and Tate brings a polished, WR1 profile.
12. Dallas Cowboys
Dillon Thieneman (S, Oregon)

"The Cowboys need a versatile player like Thieneman, who is like a Kirkland-brand Minkah Fitzpatrick. Dallas gave up the most points in the NFL last season and needs help all over the defense."

Dallas needs defensive stability, and Thieneman gives them a versatile player who can help in multiple spots. I like the idea, though the Cowboys still need more help in the trenches for the defense to truly turn around.
13. Las Vegas Raiders (Projected Trade with Rams)
Vega Ioane (G, Penn State)

"The Rams are going all in on the pass rush to win a Super Bowl. The Raiders take Vega(s) Ioane, the player fans desperately wanted before Baltimore rescinded its Maxx Crosby trade."

Pairing Ioane with Mendoza is smart roster construction. If the Raiders are going to start over at quarterback, investing in the interior offensive line is not glamorous, but it is exactly the kind of move that helps a rookie survive.
14. Detroit Lions (Projected Trade with Ravens)
Monroe Freeling (OT, Georgia)

"Baltimore, beaten to Ioane by the Raiders, picks up a fourth-rounder and moves back a few spots. With just one starter—Penei Sewell—remaining from its iconic 2024 starting unit, Detroit is desperate for more ass kickers on the offensive line."

This feels very on-brand for Detroit. Freeling gives the Lions another physical offensive lineman, and for a team built around winning up front, this is a sensible way to protect their identity.
15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Akheem Mesidor (DE, Miami)

"The Buccaneers need a pass rush. Todd Bowles’s team collapsed down the stretch, blowing the NFC South race, and his defense was the main culprit."

Tampa Bay needs more juice off the edge, so the positional fit is easy to understand. The question is whether Mesidor is enough of a difference-maker to justify this spot, but the need is absolutely real.
16. New York Jets
Makai Lemon (WR, New York Jets)

"The Jets drafting a receiver named Lemon is a joke that writes itself, but he does make sense for the team."

This is the kind of pick the Jets almost have to make after going defense at No. 2. Lemon gives them a receiver with some polish and competitiveness, but New York still needs to make sure it is not simply throwing another weapon into a broken offense.
17. Baltimore Ravens
Blake Miller (OT, Clemson)

"Offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley is 32 and has two years left on his deal, but he looked so-so after returning to Baltimore just before free agency opened last year. It would be wise for the Ravens to grab a tackle a year before they need one."

I like this because it feels like a Ravens pick in the best way: proactive, boring, and smart. Drafting a tackle before the need becomes desperate is how good teams avoid panic decisions later.
18. Minnesota Vikings
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren (S, Toledo)

"The Vikings need a safety. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores has not always been the most forgiving of rookies, but Minnesota can’t rely on 37-year-old Harrison Smith forever."

This is a projection pick, but it makes sense for Minnesota’s defensive future. Brian Flores asks a lot from his safeties, so McNeil-Warren’s development curve matters just as much as his physical tools.
19. Carolina Panthers
Kenyon Sadiq (TE, Oregon)

"Carolina needs a safety, but with the top three gone, head coach Dave Canales will want a player who can start."

Carolina's passing game is on the rise, and Sadiq could elevate it even further. I love this for the Panthers.
20. Dallas Cowboys
Jermod McCoy (CB, Tennessee)

"McCoy missed all of last year with a torn ACL, and that could be a concern for Dallas... But McCoy’s knee didn’t look like a problem when he ran a roughly 4.38-second 40-yard dash at his pro day."

This is a risk-reward pick, but Dallas can justify it if the medicals check out. McCoy gives the Cowboys badly needed coverage upside, and at this point in the round, betting on a premium-position talent is reasonable.
21. Pittsburgh Steelers
Kadyn Proctor (OT, Alabama)

"Broderick Jones has struggled at left tackle, and the Steelers’ left side is a liability for 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers (assuming he returns)."

This pick makes sense on paper, especially if Pittsburgh is trying to squeeze one more year out of Rodgers. Proctor gives the Steelers size and power, but they would need him to be more consistent than their recent tackle investments.
22. Arizona Cardinals (Projected Trade with Chargers)
Ty Simpson (QB, Alabama)

"The Chargers have just five picks in this draft, so a trade down seems like a good bet. The Cardinals can make a move similar to the one the Giants made last year for Jaxson Dart by offering a third-rounder this year and next year to move up and grab Simpson."

This is the boldest pick in the mock because it changes the entire direction of the Cardinals franchise. Despite Simpson starting just 15 games in college, I don't hate the gamble.
23. Philadelphia Eagles
Jordyn Tyson (WR, Arizona State)

"The Eagles seem likely to trade A.J. Brown, especially after they traded for Dontayvion Wicks earlier this month."

If Brown is really on the way out, Tyson gives Philadelphia a high-upside replacement with size and big-play ability. The injury history is a concern, but the talent is too tempting this late in the first round.
24. Cleveland Browns
Denzel Boston (WR, Washington)

"The Browns lose out on their preferred option, Tyson, and instead take Boston, a true X receiver who can give them an outside option."

After taking Mauigoa earlier, grabbing a game-changer at wideout is a logical follow-up.
25. Chicago Bears
Keldric Faulk (DE, Auburn)

"The Bears don’t have a Super Bowl–caliber front seven. Faulk has the frame (6-foot-6), length (almost 35-inch arms), and tenacity to play defensive end for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen."

This is a traits-and-need pick, but the Bears badly need more defensive line juice to become a serious NFC contender.
26. Buffalo Bills
T.J. Parker (DE, Clemson)

"The Bills need a pass rush. Greg Rousseau can hold down one side, but Michael Hoecht is returning from a torn Achilles, Joey Bosa left, and Bradley Chubb came in as an oft-injured free agent."

Buffalo has needed a reliable second pass-rush answer for years, and Parker gives them a sturdy edge presence with upside.
27. San Francisco 49ers
Malachi Lawrence (DE, UCF)

"The 49ers need someone with the length and twitch to match defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’s style. Lawrence can help the 49ers win this year."

This feels like a fit pick more than a pure value pick. San Francisco needs edge juice now, and Lawrence has the athletic profile to help.
28. Houston Texans
Kayden McDonald (DT, Ohio State)

"Clemson’s Peter Woods might have more upside. But McDonald can immediately be a run-stuffing defensive tackle for the Texans, and they don’t need much else to go out and win a Super Bowl this season."

I like this for the Texans. McDonald is the kind of win-now interior defender who makes sense for Houston's timeline.
29. Kansas City Chiefs
Avieon Terrell (CB, Clemson)

"Kansas City is missing a lot of players in its secondary after trading Trent McDuffie to the Rams (which is how Kansas City acquired this pick) and losing cornerback Jaylen Watson and safety Bryan Cook in free agency."

Kansas City going offensive tackle first and cornerback later is a smart use of two first-rounders. Terrell would not replace McDuffie one-for-one, but he gives the Chiefs a young cover player they clearly need.
30. Miami Dolphins
Caleb Lomu (OT, Utah)

"The Dolphins’ biggest needs are cornerback, offensive line, and receiver. If Miami goes receiver at no. 11, it simply has to grab a starting-caliber offensive tackle while they are still on the board here and attack cornerback later in the draft."

I agree that Miami has to attack the offensive line at this spot. Lomu gives the Dolphins a chance to stabilize things upfront for new QB Malik Willis.
31. New England Patriots
Max Iheanachor (OT, Arizona State)

"Drake Maye’s right tackle, Morgan Moses, is 35 years old. That just doesn’t fly."

Iheanachor injects essential youth and athleticism to solidify the protection in front of Drake Maye for the foreseeable future.
