After a Saturday feast, we get to enjoy a couple of Week 1 desserts as Virginia Tech battles South Carolina in Atlanta, and then a rivalry is renewed as Miami hosts the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The “Catholics vs. Convicts" heyday is long-gone, but these are still two premier programs with real hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff, as both teams enter the season in the top ten. This is the first meeting between these two since a 2017 matchup, and Notre Dame has not beaten the Hurricanes in Miami since 1977.
As is usually the case, the spotlight will be on the quarterback position. Carson Beck transferred to Miami from Georgia and has spent the offseason rehabbing from shoulder surgery. How healthy is Beck, and is he ready to lead the Miami offense and live up to the standard set by Cam Ward? On the other sideline, Notre Dame turns to CJ Carr, a young blue-chip recruit who was named the starter after a protracted position battle.
We know that Notre Dame’s secondary is a strength, and Miami feels like they have taken a giant step forward at the back of its defense after it crippled its 2024 season. Will either quarterback be able to stand out on Sunday night? In truth, this seems like the kind of game that both coaching staffs will end up leaning on the rushing attack. Notre Dame is expected to have one of the nation’s best offensive lines, and they bring a dominant running back duo to the contest with Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price. Miami can answer with probably the best offensive line in the ACC and some outstanding running backs of their own.

While Notre Dame and Miami both feel good about their ability to attack through the air thanks to some talented receivers, it does seem like the running backs will be the stars tonight, and the SportsGrid model has a five-star prop play on Jeremiyah Love to score the game’s first touchdown! That’s not the only five-star play in this contest. The model is very confident in the Miami Hurricanes to cover the spread of +2.5 and knock off the Fighting Irish, as well as for the game to go over the point total of 49.5 points.
The SportsGrid model is all over the Hurricanes, projecting the home underdog to cover the spread and for this game to go over the point total as Miami rides the veteran quarterback play of Carson Beck, a revamped defense, and a strong rushing attack with Mark Fletcher and Jordan Lyle to a massive week one victory over last season’s National Runner-Up.
Best Bet: Miami +2.5 and OVER 49.5 points
